IMG_0306On Friday morning of October 12 I headed to Los Angeles with my Dad for The Healthy Lifestyle Expo.  This was a full weekend conference focused on nutrition for health… Plant based nutrition, of course! Leading experts in this field were there, including Esselstyn, Barnard, MacDougall and more. The same message, with new and updated science kept over 500 people fully engaged.  I didn’t feel the California sun until 4:30 on Sunday.

I’d like to share with you bits of the weekend that had an impact on me. First, while we already know that a plant-based diet can reverse the common western diseases, Dr. Neal Barnard’s talk on Alzheimer’s was particularly interesting.  It is now clear that Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia can be halted with a whole foods, plant based diet, genes aside. The overall message was that there is one very simple cure for almost all diseases we know of in todays western world.  A plant based diet, free of processed foods is reversing heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, cancers and more. All of these diseases simply gone….when a vegan diet free of processed foods is adopted.  What, I ask, does this tell us about our evolutionary history? That we are primarily plant eaters.  This was clarified further by Dr. John MacDougall. Here you will find one of his talks from the conference:

The picture here is of me with Ruth Heidrich, who reversed her stage 4 breast cancer by adopting a plant based diet, and continuing her daily exercise regime.  She told me that on the morning of her surgery she slipped out of the hospital and went for a run. She still does a “mini” triathlon every day.  Bike, Run, Swim.  She is 77 years old, and Plant Strong.  You may have seen her in “Forks Over Knives”, and you can read her story in her book “Race for Life”. My Dad and Ruth’s husband talked football…

Another highlight of the weekend was meeting up with my nutrition teacher, Brenda Davis, R.D., who set me on this path so long ago, in 1995, when she taught nutrition at the West Coast College of Massage Therapy.  It was through Brenda I first heard a different story about food. It was her guidance that ensured my babies were nursed for two years and never had formula.  She was the one who introduced me to the connection between dairy products and type one diabetes, and to the understanding that cow milk is detrimental to human bone health.  She is now a best selling author (Becoming Vegan and Becoming Raw are two of her books I recommend). Brenda presented an informative lecture on “The Myths and Realities of Eating Raw.”  She told an inspiring story of a 38 year old man who she recently worked with along side Dr. Klaper.  This young man was suffering from cancer  and was told by doctors there was nothing else they could do for him. The man followed a plant based diet prescribed by Brenda and Dr. Klaper, and his family, in support, did the same.  The man’s cancer is now in remission, and his Dad, who had been on meds for years to control diabetes, is off diabetes meds and all signs of diabetes have disappeared. It was great to see Brenda again, and to share a lovely vegan dinner together.

From Dr Esselstyn and Dr Barnard to Jeffery Smith and Rich Roll,  the weekend was full of inspiration.  I came home revitalized and eager to share some great new information. Interested?  Be sure to sign up for my next 30 day challenge!

So much more to share about this weekend, but I leave you with this.  Two weeks ago Russia banned Genetically Modified Corn in three days.  50 countries around the world have strict guidelines or outright bans on GMO’s (genetically modified organisms).  B.T. toxin, which is an insecticide forced into the DNA of corn, kills insects by perforating their intestines when they eat the corn.

In a recent Canadian study 93 percent of pregnant women, 80 percent of umbilical blood in their babies, and 67 percent of non-pregnant women all had B.T. toxin in their systems.  Allergies, asthma, Intestinal diseases, damage to gut walls, increased gluten intolerance and many other diseases have increased since GMO’s have been introduced into our food.

B.T toxin enters our systems through direct consumption of GM corn or its derivatives, and through eating animal products whose diet includes GM corn.

The worst?  It appears that B.T. toxin is actually proliferating in the intestines of people. 88% of corn in North America is G.M.

How much corn syrup is in your child’s Halloween candy?

Major G.M. crops are:

Alfalfa, papaya, zucchini, cotton, soybeans, corn and sugar beets.

If you know anyone in California, contact them and encourage them to Vote “yes” on Proposition 37 this November 6.  If passed, GMO’s will need to be labelled on food.  This will set the stage for the rest of us. In the meantime, buy organic.
